About Listeria contamination
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that causes listeriosis, a serious foodborne illness. Symptoms — including fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea — typically appear 1 to 30 days after exposure, making it difficult to trace back to a specific food. Listeriosis is especially dangerous for pregnant women, where it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery; adults 65 and older; and people with weakened immune systems due to illness or medication.
